How to Take Pictures for a Photo Card
Photo cards are a great way to let friends and relatives share in the special occasions of your life and family--from birth announcements to holiday cards to Easter cards to seasonal "family updates". Here’s how to get the best family picture possible:

Focus on Faces. Emotion and interest in photos of people are conveyed in their faces. Put your heads together, move in close, and make your faces a large portion of the image. Avoid wide shots that show whole bodies or the living room furniture.

Coordinate Clothing. You don’t have to wear matching outfits, but similar colors or styles communicates the togetherness or unity of the family in the photo.

Straightforward Works Best. Sure you’re tempted by that edgy, trendy, serious or thought-provoking pose. But remember that a good, clear straight-on photo of the family with open eyes and smiling faces works best. A photocard is more than a greeting. It’s a keepsake for your friends and relatives and a thoughtful reminder of their relationship with you.

Get Someone Else to Take the Photo. Many cameras have timers, but there’s no substitute for someone outside of your family behind the lens. Instead of mom or dad pushing the button and then running into the shot, considering asking a friend or neighbor to take the picture for you.

Don't Forget Fido. Got a family pet? Don’t forget to include the dog, cat, hamster--whatever--in your family photo. Pets always make pictures more fun and memorable.

Update Regularly. Photocards are a great way for friends and relatives to follow your family as it grows and changes. Pick a time of the year--spring, summer or the holidays--and make a photocard a traditional greeting for your family celebrations.
