First Baby Style Checklist
Whether you are going to give birth or adopt your first child, there's lots to do in the style department to prepare for your baby. Make a checklist of the essentials and then dive-in to preparing for your little one in style.

The Pregnancy. Maternity clothing has gone from hand-me-downs to Saks Fifth Avenue in recent years. Lots of styles and options are available. Choose several pair of solid, loose fitting pants and coordinating tops at a local maternity store. One fun and stylish option--wear some of hubby's button-down shirts over a simple top. Another consideration is comfortable shoes. Find some flats or sneakers with good cushioning and support that will wear well for general use.

The Nursery. An in style nursery is all about being practical. Paint versus wallpaper, then choose furniture that offers plenty of storage and accessibility. Keep the theme simple and in soft, airy colors--it will make the baby feel safe and comfortable. Save the over-the-top fire engine or princess theme for toddler years. Don't forget useful storage baskets for toys and plastic tubs to store extra clothes as baby grows.

The Baby Shower. When friends or family offer to throw a shower, it's a great opportunity to receive items you really need, versus a bunch of baby stuff you may or may not use. Take the opportunity to make suggestions as to what might be most helpful. Your friends will want to give gifts that you will use--but they'll need your suggestions to go on.

The Diaper Bag. A key piece of style hardware for a new mom is the diaper bag. First, know that you'll probably need more than one. Pick solid colors that will go with your post-pregnancy wardrobe. Consider having it monogramed with your baby's name or initials. Be sure it has a comfortable shoulder strap--you'll need it to carry both the bag and the baby at the same time.

Happy Birthday. Set boundries for relatives and friends on and following your child's birth or adoption. You, your spouse and your new child will need a little privacy at first. Take a digital camera so you can email pictures to friends--just about all hospitals will have wireless access for your laptop these days. A great simple and stylish idea for the hospital room is to bring a homemade guest book for visitors to sign--it'll remind you of that very special day in the life of your baby.

Toys. Be aware that many of the newest baby toys can be a little over-stimulating. Choose simple and fun toys that will help the baby learn their senses of touch, sight and sound. Think too about portability--toys that can go with you in the minivan to the in-laws' house, or move easily from the nursery to the living room or family room.

Announcing the Newest Family Member. A birth announcement is a great tradition for any family. Go ahead and prepare your address list a few weeks before the baby is due. Photo cards are very popular these days--you can order them and have them arrive within a few days of returning home. Get a friend or family member to help get them in the mail for you.

Baby Clothes. For styling the baby, think about some color combinations you like and let your family and friends know so clothing gifts they buy will coordinate with other purchases. Don't forget accessories you'll need for the baby like bath towels, blankets and changing table pads--all of these can be color-coordinated.
