Baby Showers at the Office
If you have coworker expecting a child, it’s certainly appropriate, if your supervisor or office management agree, to have a baby shower at the office. If the management says no, consider having an office event at a local restaurant instead. Some offices have policies restricting office parties so as to be fair to all employees—don’t single out your friend if you don’t plan to treat other workers with equal fanfare.
Enlist coworkers to divide up the tasks and collect funds to purchase needed supplies. Check with honoree's supervisor to make sure invited workers will be available during the party time. Be sure not to plan an office party during peak or busy work times. Try to schedule the shower during lunchtime when it is easiest for employees to take a break.
Keep the event short and sweet—under an hour if possible. Collecting funds and purchasing beverages and a party tray make the event little additional work for any of the attendees. Guests and purchase their own gifts or contribute to a gift given by the entire office. Be sure to clearly state that participation is not mandatory. Staying low-key is important to making everyone feel comfortable and willing to participate.
Limit the guest list to the employee’s close friends or their department—especially if you work for a large organization. If you have trouble choosing a gift, consider a gift card to a baby store or local or online outlet. An office shower is normally more of an “impromptu” event, so keep the gift cost per attendee low and don’t splurge on fancy or expensive food.
For decoration, again keep it simple. You likely won’t have much time to set up during the workday. A gaggle of balloons and a few simple streamers and maybe a colorful tablecloth are all that are needed. Perhaps a nice potted plant as a centerpiece as well—something the guest of honor can take home to remember the event. Oh, and don’t forget, alcohol is not appropriate in an office setting. Serve punch or soft drinks instead.
